Starlink Mini Review: Is It Worth the Price for Off-Grid Internet?

This small dish gets you internet nearly anywhere. The Starlink Mini pulls speeds over 250 Mbps, sips power, and is roughly the size of an iPad, which means you can run it off solar and stay completely off the grid without giving up your connection.


It's also changed how I work and travel more than almost any other piece of gear I own. I've spent the last several months boondocking around Maine and New England with it, no electricity, no cell service, running on solar the whole time. But there are real downsides, and the price is the biggest one.


Here's everything: performance, power draw, cost, service plans, setup, pros and cons, and whether I think it's worth it.

Build and portability: why the Mini won me over

It's significantly lighter than the full-size Gen 3 Standard dish. I made a whole Starlink Mini vs Standard comparison if you're stuck between the two, and after making that video I went with the Mini myself.


The reason is simple: it's so small and portable that I actually use it. It's easy to throw in the Jeep, easy to carry back and forth, and that flexibility means I get more use out of it, which makes the cost easier to justify.


The size also opens up mounting spots you'd never get with a bigger dish. I tuck mine in a cabinet and it's been fine. I've seen people mount them to car sunroofs. In my Jeep it sits tucked under the roof in the back, a genuinely tiny spot, and it works perfectly.


The router is built into the dish, which is a big part of the portability. Worth noting it's a Wi-Fi 5 router, not the Wi-Fi 6 you get with the Standard Gen 3. But having everything in one body means no lugging separate wiring and a separate router around.


Setup

About as easy as it gets. Plug into the back, open the Starlink app, connect to its Wi-Fi, and it walks you through a handful of steps. Then point it at the sky and it starts looking for satellites.


Power efficiency: the real reason I bought it

It runs at 20 to 40 watts. The Starlink Standard is about four times that.


That number is why this thing works for off-grid living. I can run it on solar for many days without thinking about it, depending on your battery capacity. There's also a USB-C cable option so you can run it off a fairly small power bank, since the draw is low enough that a lot of banks will handle it.


There's a sleep mode you can put on a schedule to save more power when you're not using it. Be aware it still draws some power in sleep.


Real world performance: what can you actually do?

Can you stream Netflix? Do video calls? Yes to both, with caveats.


Downloads are rated up to 250 Mbps and I've seen higher. Uploads sit around 25 Mbps, which is on the low side compared to wired internet, but this is its own category.


You need a clear view of the sky. That's the whole game. Right now I'm parked under heavy tree cover and I'm getting good speeds but not consistent ones, because the satellites move and the trees keep interrupting. I can still send and receive messages and stream Netflix under trees. I can't hold a video or phone call, because it downloads and uploads in bursts as satellites pass and then drops. I had a call cut out mid-conversation earlier.


To put actual work through it: over the last month or so on the road I've transferred more than a terabyte, pulling video files off my home server and uploading to editors. That's over a thousand gigabytes. It handled it.


It works through fiberglass

This mattered a lot to me. My camper is a fiberglass build and my Jeep has a fiberglass roof, and the signal goes right through both while keeping its speeds.


I was originally thinking about permanently roof-mounting a Standard dish. I went with the Mini inside instead, because inside means nobody sees it, nobody can grab it, and it's not sitting out in the weather. Much easier all around.


The one downside of keeping it inside: it generates some heat. Mine sits in a corner so I don't really notice it, but in summer it's there.


Weather

If you do mount it outside, it's rated for a range of temperatures and conditions and has a snow melt feature so snow doesn't kill your speeds. Ten feet of snow is a different conversation.


I hit some genuinely extreme rain days on this trip and noticed no speed difference at all.


Wi-Fi range from the built-in router

Better than I expected. Your immediate campsite easily, plus probably a site to your left or right. I ran speed tests walking away from it and was still pulling around 176 Mbps down at roughly 100 feet out. That covers a big area.


If you want the Mini's full speed, hardwire it. There's an Ethernet port on the back that bypasses the built-in Wi-Fi entirely. You can also upgrade to the Starlink Wi-Fi 6 router or a third party router.

The Mini costs substantially more than the Standard, and the Standard is rated for higher speeds. You're paying purely for the portable, compact size.


If you want to use it in motion you need one of the Roam plans. With the volume of footage I move, I'm on Roam Unlimited at $165 a month.


A couple months back Starlink discontinued the pause option. Instead you drop to a $5/month standby plan. It's actually not bad: unlimited but extremely low speed data, enough for emergency messages, so you stay connected for almost nothing.


Residential plan availability on the Mini seems to vary by region. It's been reported as accessible in some areas. It isn't where I am, so I can't speak to it.


Note that these plans change frequently, so check current pricing before you commit.


Pros

  • The size. Biggest advantage by far. It fits in a backpack like a laptop

  • Power efficiency. 20 to 40W means solar can carry it for days

  • Built-in router, so the whole thing is one portable unit

  • Runs off ordinary power banks thanks to the low draw

  • The speeds are genuinely impressive for something this small

  • Goes through fiberglass, so you can keep it inside and out of the weather


Cons

  • The price. It costs more than the higher-rated Standard dish. That's odd, and it's the biggest knock

  • No direct power-off in the app. You either enable sleep mode or physically cut power. A real off switch in the app would make a big difference

  • Service plans aren't transferable between dishes. I'd happily buy a Standard to hard-mount in the camper and keep the Mini as the portable one, if I could move one plan between them. I'm not paying for two Starlink plans, and I'd never use both at once

  • Tree cover kills consistency. Intermittent connection, fine for messages, not for calls

  • Slow to reconnect after a hard power off. Don't expect to plug in and be online


Is the Starlink Mini worth it?

For me, yes, though it isn't perfect and it's still expensive. I've been running it for about four to six months and it's bought me a real amount of freedom. I don't have to chase coffee shops and libraries to get work done, which means more time actually outside. I still go to the coffee shops, but I don't have to.


Buy the Mini if you move around a lot, if you're running on solar, or if you need to mount it somewhere small or keep it out of sight. Buy the Standard instead if the dish is going to sit in one place, you have the power for it, and you'd rather put the savings toward the service plan.

Final thoughts

The Starlink Mini isn't perfect and it isn't cheap. But it's the thing that lets me park in the middle of nowhere, transfer a terabyte of footage, and still be outside instead of hunting for wifi.
