What's In My Camera Bag: My Sony a7 V Setup For Life On The Road

My Sony camera kit laid out flat, two bodies and six lenses

Sony published a What's In My Bag piece I wrote for Alpha Universe, and it walks through the camera bag I've been carrying for about a year of living full time on the road.

Quick context if you're new here. I left New York, I live in a 96 square foot travel trailer, and I've been off the grid for nearly a year now. Living alongside tons of wildlife. Everything below has been rained on, snowed on, covered in dust, and rattled on washboard roads.

FAQ

What camera does I use?

My main body is currently the Sony a7 V. I also carry a Sony a7CR for travel, vlogging, and car mounts.

Is 33 megapixels enough for wildlife?

For what I do, yes. It gives me enough room to crop into a distant animal and still have a frame I can print, without the file sizes getting out of hand when I'm storing them.

What's the one lens you'd keep?

The 28-70mm f/2 G Master. It's on the camera about 70 percent of the time and it covers what I'd otherwise need around three primes for.

Do you really need a 600mm f/4?

Need is a strong word. What it buys you is distance, which means the animal isn't reacting to you, and separation at f/4 that's just insane.

How do you charge camera gear off grid?

Eight hundred watts of solar into a power station. That covers batteries, hard drives, and drones most days.

The Rest Of It

The full piece is up on Sony Alpha Universe, and it goes into a bit more on how I actually use this stuff day to day.

Let me know what you think in the comments. I'll see you out there on the road.
